Partition a USB Flash Drive in Windows XP

One way to Partition a USB Flash Drive from Windows XP and mark it active "bootable". Windows detects Flash Drives as "Removable Disks" and flash drives are typically shipped formatted as a "Super Floppy" (USB-FDD without a partition table) . The Windows built in format utility cannot create a partition table on Removable Disks. Furthermore, the diskpart utility in Windows XP will not allow you to partition Removable Media, although diskpart does work for partitioning a Flash Drive from Windows Vista/7.

To address the inability to Partition a Flash Drive in Windows XP, you need to use a third party low level partitioning tool such as BOOTICE, created by Pauly. BOOTICE Home Page

Note: I partition my flash drives as USB-HDD (with a partition table), simply because my computers support booting from Flash Drives formatted to be seen as a USB Hard Disk.

One way to Partition a Flash Drive from Windows

Download BOOTICE, unzip, and run BOOTICE.EXE
Make sure your "USB Flash Drive" is set as the Destination Disk
Click Parts Manage
Click ReFormat USB Disk
Select USB-HDD mode, and click Next
Select Format as Fat32, and click OK

FIGURES :

You should now have an active "bootable" USB-HDD Fat32 formatted Flash Drive, containing a partition table with a single partition. You should be able to Boot It as a Hard Drive.

Restore GRUB2 after installing Windows

How I Restored GRUB2 after a Windows 7 Install. GRUB2 (Grand Unified Bootloader) is a universal bootloader used by Ubuntu and other Linux Distributions. If you have a Linux Distribution installed on a partition, and attempt to install Windows alongside it, your GRUB bootloader will be overwritten by the Windows bootloader, and your computer will only boot into Windows.

Recovering the GRUB2 Bootloader after a Windows Install is simple. When finished, your Bootloader should detect all installed Operating Systems and automatically add a bootable menu item for each of them.

Note: This GRUB2 Installation process assumes that a Linux Partition still exists. If you overwrote Linux with Windows, this tutorial will not work for you, as there is no Linux system to recover boot.

How to Restore GRUB2 after installing Windows:

Boot from an Ubuntu Live CD or Live USB
Once up and running, Open a Terminal
Type sudo su (press enter after typing each command)
Type fdisk -l
Note which device contains your Linux partition (IE: /dev/sda1)
Type mount /dev/sdx# /mnt (replacing x# with your actual device and partition number)
Type mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
Type mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
Type cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc/resolv.conf
Type chroot /mnt
Type grub-install --recheck /dev/sdx (replacing x with your actual device)
Type reboot (to reboot your PC)

Make sure to remove your Live USB or CD. Upon reboot you should be presented with a GRUB2 menu. However, Windows is missing. Now, I show you how to fix that.

Making GRUB 2 detect Windows Installs:

Proceed to boot into your Linux environment.
Open a terminal and type sudo update-grub (enter your root password when prompted)

If all went well, grub should have updated it's menu entries to reflect what it detected. Including existing Windows partitions.

The Amiga was released just as the personal computing world standardized on IBM-PC clones. This prevented it from gaining serious market share, despite the fact that the first Amigas had a substantial technological lead on the IBM XTs of the time. Instead, it acquired a small but zealous population of enthusiastic hackers who dreamt of one day unseating the clones (see Amiga Persecution Complex). The strength of the Amiga platform seeded a small industry of companies building software and hardware for the platform, especially in graphics and video applications (see video toaster).

Due to spectacular mismanagement, Commodore did hardly any R&D, allowing the competition to close Amiga's technological lead. After Commodore went bankrupt in 1994 the technology passed through several hands, none of whom did much with it. However, the Amiga is still being produced in Europe under license and has a substantial number of fans, which will probably extend the platform's life considerably. viruses,common virus scanners include norton and mcafee.

Occasionally, the vanilla ASCII character set is used with the color codes, but on BBSs, ANSI and `IBM characters' tend to go together.

>>>   Fragmentation scanning : This is not a new port scanning method in and of itself, but a modification of other techniques. Instead of just sending the probe packet, you break it into a couple of small IP fragments. You are splitting up the TCP header over several packets to make it harder for packet filters and so forth to detect what you are doing. Be careful with this! Some programs have trouble handling these tiny packets. My favorite sniffer segmentation faulted immediately upon receiving the first 36-byte fragment. After that comes a 24 byte one! While this method won't get by packet filters and firewalls that queue all IP fragments (like the CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG option in Linux), a lot of networks can't afford the performance hit this causes. Reveal or Recover XP Administrator Password using Ophcrack

Forgot Administrator password? Or is that you just wished to access the system with Admin privileges, you can break into the system without even feeling the need to change the password. If you want to reset the password, refer to my earlier post “Break or Reset Administrator password in XP”.

Knowing XP or even Vista’s Administrator password is easy and using this trick I was able to use my college’s computers with Admin rights even without changing the original set passwords

To reveal the original set password what all you need is just an iso image of Ophcrack(download it from here). This tool is so powerful that it can reveal almost any kind of password within 5 minutes. This password cracker works on rainbow tables and is available for both XP and Vista.

Procedure:
1. Burn the image on to the CD.

2. Boot the system from this CD.

3. Rest it will take care of itself.

The only disadvantage of this tool is that it is quite large in size (around 450 MB), but it’s still worth downloading. It can both be used for good and bad purposes which I leave it on you.

Fix the problem of Show hidden files and folders getting reset

This is a common problem these days that the option of “Show hidden files and folders” always gets reset each time when we set it to show the hidden files. This is sure a case of infected system either with Trojan or virus.

Possibly the system is infected by a virus named “amvo.exe”. So let’s remove this first to be on a safer side.

Steps to remove amvo.exe:

1.    We need to delete following files
•    amvo.exe
•    amvo0.dll
•    amvo1.dll

2.    Open command prompt by typing cmd in the Run box. Then type
•    cd windows\system32
•    attrib -s -h -r amvo*.*
•    del amvo*.*

Steps to fix the problem:

1. Now open registry editor and navigate to the entryHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folders\Hidden\SHOWALL

2. On the right side see the entry named “CheckedValue”, if the value is set to ‘0′ change it to ‘1′.

3. The “DefaultValue” under the “CheckedValue” should be set to ‘2′.

4. Click Refresh under the view tab and if the entries the same that we set just now that means the problem is solved.

Double Click on Drive does not open

We all have experienced someday or the other, this problem of Windows XP in which when we double click on the drive it does not open or some dialog box opens up but not the drive. Yes, you know it right; the problem is caused by some virus activity and if you don’t know

how to open this, here is the fix (just make sure that the virus has been removed, else the problem will persist):

When the problem happens, it means that there is a file named “Autorun.inf” in the root drive, but you will not be able to view it as it is a system file. This file is rarely caught by the anti virus. This file makes sure to run the virus and infect your system. This is the file which is responsible to run the dialog box that appears on autoplay. So this is a useless file for sure.

Common sense says to delete this file but even that is not easy as it possesses system, hidden and read only attributes. So,

1.    First go to cmd, type “attrib X:\Autorun.inf –s –r –h” without quotes where X is your drive name which is having the problem.
2.    Now the file is visible and ready to delete.
3.    After deleting the file, close the explorer and open it again, your problem is fixed.

Well this is the best and easy fix available without using any software.

Solution to remove Write Protection from USB Pen Drive

This seems to be the problem of most of us these days and some of our readers whowanted to know the methods how they can remove the Write Protected error from theirUSB drives like Pen Drives and memory cards.

What is Write Protected error and why it happens?

In the Write Protected error, we can’t write or copy any data in our flash drives and even can’t format the drive.

There are many reasons that cause this problem, let’s see solutions of them.

Solutions:

• First of all try to locate a small switch (if any, that you may have not noticed) at some place on the drive or memory card reader. This is the prime reason for this error. If there is one, switch it to the other side to turn the protection off.

• Yes I know this problem is also occurring these days without this switch but not to worry. Just download this helpful software from here and run it to execute a “low-level format” on the drive. This software is quite handy and may take few attempts to actually remove the error.

• The problem can also be caused by some virus activity so just get it scanned by some updated good anti virus which may solve your problem.

• BUT if none of the methods listed above solves your problem then your pen drive might have gone corrupted, so just get it replaced.

Update 1:

After the low level format, you may need to “Partition the drive“. Dont worry, partitioning a pen drive means allocating it its File System and Cluster Size that was lost after the Low Level Format.

For that:

Run diskmgmt.msc in Run.
In the disk management window, select the pen drive, right click on it and click on Format.
Now choose the File System and Allocation Unit Size and do not check the boxes below.

Click OK and the drive will be reusable after this.

Update 2 (Better Solution):

Follow the steps in this post and just put the value 0 (zero) in step 5.

This will surely solve your problem now.
